Extract / Preview: Luna by Ian McDonald

CB - Go - Sep - Luna ONE
In a white room on the edge of the Sinus Medii sit six naked teen agers. Three girls, three boys. Their skins are black, yellow, brown, white. They scratch at their skins constantly, intently. Depressurisation dries hide, breeds itches.
The room is tight, a barrel barely large enough to stand up in. The kids are wedged on benches facing each other, thighs pressed against their neighbours’, knees touching those opposite. There is nowhere to look and nothing to see except each other but they are  shy of eye contact. Too  close, too exposed. Each breathes through a transparent mask. Oxygen hisses where the seals are inexact. Just below the window on the outlock door is a pressure meter. It stands at fifteen kilopascals. It has taken an hour to bring the pressure this low.
But outside is vacuum.

Lucasinho leans forward and once again looks through the small window. The gate is easily visible; the line from him to it is straight and open. The sun is low, the shadows are long and profound, thrown towards him. Blacker on the black regolith, they could conceal many treacheries. Surface temperature is one hundred and twenty Celsius, his familiar had warned. It will be a fire-walk.

A firewalk, an icewalk.

Extract / Preview: The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers

CB - Aug - The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet From the ground, we stand;
From our ships, we live;
By the stars, we hope.
Day  128, GC  Standard  306

As she woke up in the pod, she remembered three things. First, she was travelling through open space. Second, she was about to start a new job, one she could not screw up. Third, she had bribed a government official into giving her a new identity file. None of this information was new, but it wasn’t pleasant to wake up to.

She wasn’t supposed to be awake yet, not for another day at least, but that was what you got for booking cheap transport. Cheap transport meant a cheap pod flying on cheap fuel, and cheap drugs to knock you out. She had flickered into consciousness several times since launch – surfacing in confusion, falling back just as she’d got a grasp on things. The pod was dark, and there were no navigational screens. There was no way to tell how much time had passed between each waking, or how far she’d travelled, or if she’d even been travelling at all. The thought made her anxious, and sick. 750 Years in Paris by Vincent Mahé: Preview!

CBP - NB - 750 Years in Paris We were always intrigued by Vincent Mahé’s 750 Years in Paris, even though we hadn’t a clue quite what it was going to be like! Well it’s sequential art all right, with 60 full-page panels narrating developments in the plot of Paris over years if not decades, ending on a very poignant, very recent event in the city’s history, and not a speech bubble in sight. Check out our preview below!
* Please note – there’s some change of resolution and positioning but it should certainly whet your appetite for more. And if you’re wondering why only the bottom half of the page is being used, well Paris gets rather bigger in the pages that follow these…

Mike’s Place by Jack Baxter, Joshua Faudem and Koren Shadmi

We knew Mike’s Place was something important when we first came across it and we’re very pleased to have some interior art selections to share from this important and moving work of graphic non-fiction.

CGP - Jun - First Second - Mike's Place Having read so much lazy copy from the back and reviews of literary books and misery memoirs with the words ‘a testament to the human spirit’, Mike’s Place is simply a story of people, good and flawed people and what happens to them in Israel 2003. It’s the work – with artist Koren Shadmi – of the film-makers of ‘Blues by the Beach’, the documentary of the same place and events which have a far from indirect connection to the London 7/7 bombings as related in the epilogue. CA - Blues by the Beach poster

At time of writing Mike’s Place is recently out (9th June). We hope you enjoy the pages and would wholeheartedly encourage you to buy a copy for yourself and for others, and certainly for your shop if you happen to be a retailer.

Respect and peace to all involved.
