September seems to mark endings and beginnings. Publishing from Corgi Children’s is the final Discworld novel by the great and much missed Terry Pratchett; but then there’s a new talent touted for greatness by Pratchett’s friend and co-conspirator (Good Omens) Neil Gaiman. Two trilogies end and there’s some noteworthy series beginning. In fact, given at Carabas we’re especially up for urban fantasy and steampunk, noteworthy is completely inadequate when the world’s leading urban fantasy author begins a new steampunk sequence!

And then there’s David Duchovny writing about cows. Yes cows. Yes that David Duchnovny. It’s kind of like Californication meets the X-Files – with cows; possibly.

It’s September. It’s when publishers start bringing out the big guns.

It appeared fifteen years ago, in remotest China. A slice of another dimension. A deep and expansive dungeon, filled with magic and monsters. Many people were lost – bloodily and horribly – in early explorations, but eventually its first few levels were secured. Now, under a vast dome run by a private corporation, the dungeon is part scientific site and part adventurers’ playground – a deadly, treasure-filled lure posing a single challenge – how deep can you go and hope to survive?
Dee Hunter knows – as a guide and keeper she is tired of mopping up the blood. But when deep in the dungeon Dee has a chance encounter with a dying sorceror, she begins a journey to the deepest level of all. For the sorceror told her of the true danger she and everyone faces – the dungeon is growing. If Dee is to stop it turning our world inside out, she must travel through the rift that lies far below.
To the otherworld. To its beginning.

Angry Robot

The intriguing literary SF second novel from the author of the Clarke Award-nominated The Red Men
In the near future, after the collapse of society as we know it, one English town survives under the protection of the computer algorithms of the Process, which governs every aspect of their lives. The Process gives and takes; it allocates resources, giving each person exactly what it has calculated they will need. Human life has become totally algorithm-driven, and James, the town bailiff, is charged with making sure the Process’s suggestions are implemented.
But now the Process is making soldiers. It is readying for war — the First World War. Mysteriously, the Process is slowly recreating events that took place over a hundred years ago, and is recruiting the town’s men to fight in an artificial reconstruction of the Dardanelles campaign. James, too, must go fight. And he will discover that the Process has become vastly more sophisticated and terrifying than anyone had believed possible.

Bookseller Editor’s Choice – Paperback Preview September: “High praise from the likes of Neil Gaiman and Kim Stanley Robinson…”
A young woman called Meena wakes up one morning covered in blood. There are mysterious snakebites across her chest. She knows she’s in danger but something has happened to her memory. All she can do is run – but why? And from whom?
As Meena plots her escape she hears of the Trail – an extraordinary, forbidden bridge that spans the Arabian sea, connecting India to Africa like a silver ribbon. Its purpose is to harness the power of the ocean – Blue Energy – but it also offers a subculture of travellers a chance for sanctuary and adventure.
Convinced the Trail is her salvation, Meena gathers supplies – GPS, a scroll reader, a sealable waterproof pod. And so begins her extraordinary journey – both physical and spiritual – from India to Ethiopia, the home of her birth. But as she runs away from the threat of violence she is also running towards a shocking revelation about her past and her family.
‘It’s transfixing to watch Monica Byrne become a major player in science fiction with her debut novel . . . Beautifully drawn people in a future that feels so close you can touch it, blended with lush language and concerns of myth. It builds a bridge from past to future, from East to West. Glorious stuff’ – Neil Gaiman

A nominee for the 2015 Nebula Award, COMING HOME is Jack McDevitt’s brilliant new novel of interstellar travel, with an 8,000-year-old mystery finally to be resolved
The triumphant new novel from SF author Jack McDevitt brings together interstellar travel, an 8,000-year-old mystery, and a dramatic mission to rescue 3,000 spaceship passengers unaware of their perilous situation. ‘The logical heir to Isaac  Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke’ Stephen King
It’s 1435 on Alex Benedict’s world Rimway, eleven years since 3000 passengers boarded the Capella. The interstellar cruise ship is trapped in a transdimensional space warp, frozen in time. Just a few days have passed on board, and its inhabitants are oblivious to having lost the lives they knew. There is hope for a high-profile rescue attempt, but if it fails they may all die.
As the Capella effort becomes increasingly difficult, Alex comes across a rare artifact dating back to the original NASA interstellar ships. The discovery arouses suspicions and Alex and his pilot Chase can uncover the truth only by returning to the museum-like planet Earth.
As Chase is pulled into the Capella rescue mission, the entire human race watches and waits.

Debut YA novel, part fairy tale and part gritty realism, about the thin tissue separating our world from the world of dreams and nightmares. Perfect for fans of Laini Taylor’s DAUGHTER OF SMOKE AND BONE series and Maggie Stiefvater’s THE RAVEN CYCLE.
Dea Donahue has been able to travel through people’s dreams since she was six years old. Her mother taught her the three rules of walking: Never interfere. Never be seen. Never walk the same person’s dream more than once. Dea has never questioned her mother, not about the rules, not about the clocks or the mirrors, not about moving from place to place to be one step ahead of the unseen monsters that Dea’s mother is certain are right behind them.
Then a mysterious new boy, Connor, comes to town and Dea finally starts to feel normal.  As Connor breaks down the walls that she’s had up for so long, he gets closer to learning her secret. For the first time she wonders if that’s so bad. But when Dea breaks the rules, the boundary between worlds begins to deteriorate. How can she know what’s real and what’s not?

The astonishing, unforgettable sequel to RED RISING, which the Examiner called ‘properly a-ma-zing, like an adrenalin shot for the imagination.’
Ender’s Game meets The Hunger Games in this, the second in an extraordinary trilogy from an incredible new voice.
‘I’m still playing games. This is just the deadliest yet.’
Darrow is a rebel forged by tragedy. For years he and his fellow Reds worked the mines, toiling to make the surface of Mars inhabitable. They were, they believed, mankind’s last hope. Until Darrow discovered that it was all a lie, and that the Red were nothing more than unwitting slaves to an elitist ruling class, the Golds, who had been living on Mars in luxury for generations.
In RED RISING, Darrow infiltrated Gold society, to fight in secret for a better future for his people. Now fully embedded amongst the Gold ruling class, Darrow continues his dangerous work to bring them down from within. It’s a journey that will take him further than he’s ever been before – but is Darrow truly willing to pay the price that rebellion demands?
A life-or-death tale of vengeance with an unforgettable hero at  its heart, Golden Son guarantees Pierce Brown’s continuing status as one of fiction’s most exciting new voices.

The Bookseller Magazine – Paperback Preview September Topsellers. And it’s David Duchovny. Yes that David Duchovny.
Holy Cow by David Duchovny is a comic delight that will thrill fans of Jasper Fforde and Ben Aaronovitch. And anyone who enjoys a witty wisecrack in a novel.
Elsie Bovary is a cow and a pretty happy one at that. Until one night, Elsie sneaks out of the pasture and finds herself drawn to the farmhouse. Through the window, she sees the farmer’s family gathered around a bright Box God – and what the Box God reveals about something called an ‘industrial meat farm’ shakes Elsie’s understanding of her world to its core.
The only solution? To escape to a better, safer world. And so a motley crew is formed: Elsie; Shalom, a grumpy pig who’s recently converted to Judaism; and Tom, a suave turkey who can’t fly, but can work an iPhone with his beak. Toting stolen passports and slapdash human disguises, they head for the airport …
Elsie is a wise-cracking, slyly witty narrator; Tom dispenses psychiatric advice in a fake German accent; and Shalom ends up unexpectedly uniting Israelis and Palestinians. David Duchovny’s charismatic creatures point the way toward a mutual understanding and acceptance the world desperately needs.

Jim Butcher, the #1 New York Times and #1 Sunday Times bestselling author of The Dresden Files, conjures up a new series set in a fantastic world of noble families, steam-powered technology, and magic-wielding warriors . . .
Since time immemorial, the Spires have sheltered humanity, towering for miles over the mist-shrouded surface of the world. Within their halls, aristocratic houses have ruled for generations, developing scientific marvels, fostering trade alliances, and building fleets of airships to keep the peace.
Captain Grimm commands the merchant ship, Predator. Fiercely loyal to Spire Albion, he has taken their side in the cold war with Spire Aurora, disrupting the enemy’s shipping lines by attacking their cargo vessels. But when the Predator is severely damaged in combat, leaving captain and crew grounded, Grimm is offered a proposition from the Spirearch of Albion-to join a team of agents on a vital mission in exchange for fully restoring Predator to its fighting glory.
And even as Grimm undertakes this dangerous task, he will learn that the conflict between the Spires is merely a premonition of things to come. Humanity’s ancient enemy, silent for more than ten thousand years, has begun to stir once more. And death will follow in its wake.
