But where and when better to get a bevy of expert tips on those titles – graphic novel / collections and in comic form – you may or may not be aware of to share? Forbidden Planet logo

So we thought we’d do everyone a favour and catch up with staff of Gosh!, Forbidden Planet and Raygun (East) and get some on spec on location staff picks!

You’re very welcome 🙂

LSCC - Big Kids First up the chaps from Gosh! Comics. Steve is loving Michael Deforge’s BIG KIDS, out as a graphic novel this coming week from Drawn and Quarterly. Short copy from D&Q: “Teenage misfits and adolescent rabble-rousing take center stage in this dark coming-of-age tale.” Tom on the other hand offers us a current comic series by indie legend – Love and Rockets co-creator – Gilbert Hernandez, BLUBBER, from Fantagraphics. #1 came out in June 15, #2 just out as of January this year. [See also our February New Title Recommends for info on the latest Love and Rockets titles!] LSCC - Blubber #2 Jan 16
LSCC - Zap Comix #16 Nevs of Raygun East (@FilthyNevs) thinks we should have ZAP COMIX #16 published by Fantagraphics on our radars; it wasn’t but he’s absolutely right. It’s the last to feature all 8 Zap artists (Robert Williams, Robert R Crumb, Spain Rodriguez, Victor Moscoso, Rick Griffin, Gilbert Shelton, S. Clay Wilson, Paul Mavrides) – it’s a kind of swansong of that generation of underground creators. LSCC - The Eltingville Club
His GN pick is Evan Dorkin’s THE ELTINGVILLE CLUB – and damn right too! We knew Dorkin for the fabulous ‘MILK AND CHEESE: DAIRY PRODUCTS WITH ATTITUDE’ which appeared in the pages of the wonderful Deadline magazine in the 90’s along with strips like Tank Girl and… The Eltingville Club?! Crap WE ACTUALLY KNOW THIS – and are so damn happy it’s being collected and released by Dark Horse comics in March! It’s basically The Big Bang Theory meets South Park, a cathartic satire of the most obnoxious of nerd-dom, complete with a Cartman character who could very well have been the inspiration. Nice one Nevs.
LSCC - American Flagg We return to the Forbidden Planet stall to find no less than 9 recommends awaiting us. First up is a backlister, Howard Chaykin’s AMERICAN FLAGG, LSCC16-relevant as the creator is a guest and panellist at the Con. Next is similarly all-American but of the vampire kind: Scott Snyder and Rafael Albuquerque’s AMERICAN VAMPIRE, the latest volume (8) coming out in March from Vertigo. LSCC - American Vampire
LSCC - Sex Criminals Vol 3 They’re also loving Fraction & Zdarsky’s SEX CRIMINALS, their creator-owned ongoing from Image, in which a couple with the power to stop time when they orgasm committing bank robberies at… just that time. We’re getting about a volume a year in collection, volume 3 coming in May (No… pun… intended…) Meanwhile Ryan North and Erica Henderson are rocking someone’s world on the superhero humour front in Marvel’s UNBEATABLE SQUIRREL GIRL, coming in comic and graphic novel form over the months ahead. LSCC - Unbeatable Squirrel Girl V3
LSCC - Transformers MTMTE V9 We’re a little less about the tie-ins and adaptations at Carabas but are still pleased to get a few picks of this nature from FP. First is James Roberts & Alex Milne / IDW’s TRANSFORMERS: MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE (Vol 9 in May). Then we’d not even heard of Adult Swim’s animated parody RICK AND MORTY, but clearly Zac Gorman, CJ Cannon, Ryan Hill and Marc Ellerby’s comic adaptation itself is of sufficient excellence to get a Forbidden Planet recommendation (sounds also a Gosh! fave as they’re hosting the Volume 1 collection signing this coming Saturday!) LSCC - Rick and Morty
CG - Oct - Killing and Dying Then there’s two which just happen to have published in Oct 2015 and be picks of our own of the same month! On the opposite end of the sequential spectrum there’s a recommend for Adrian Tomine’s KILLING AND DYING, picked up by mainstream book publisher Faber in the UK, a collection of shorts on the “anxieties of being alive”. And Warren Ellis and Declan Shalvey’s – and colourist extraordinaire Jordie Bellaire’s – INJECTION from Image also gets the thumbs up at LSCC. CG - Im - Oct - Injection
LSCC - Klaus Lastly but in no respect leastly, and still in coming in uncollected comic form, is industry legend Grant Morrison and artist Dan Mora’s KLAUS – basically Viking Warrior as Santa Claus. Egad – ‘Nuff said really!

Cheers for the picks guys and hope you enjoyed the Con!
