CRICK CRACK CLUB PRESENTS FAIRY TALES FOR GROWN-UPS – THE HOMING STONE, BY HUGH LUPTON. “Arthur Ransome is best known as the author of Swallows and Amazons. What is less well known is that as a young man he went to Russia as a journalist, was swept into the maelstrom of the Revolution, collected a rich mass of fairytales, and became a spy. He played chess with Lenin and fell in love with Trotsky’s secretary, Evgenia Shelepina. Through history, legend, and fairytale Hugh Lupton tells how his great uncle tells and Evgenia’s escaped through Estonia on horse and cart. As the boundaries between fairytale and reality twist and fade, our various heroes put their faith in talking horses, a utopian future, and the power of a stone talisman to get them home.” The Forge, 3-7 Delancey Street, NW1 7NL

PARALLEL LINES PRESENTS ELIZA SHADADD @ SEBRIGHT ARMS! “With piercingly mature vocals layered in texture and an ever growing style that borders between the heartbroken indie of Daughter, the devastating guitars of PJ Harvey, and the chill of Torres, Eliza Shaddad is an impeccable talent. Releasing her debut Waters EP last summer, she picked up strong praise from the likes of The Line Of Best Fit and Clash, while new single Wars has won over Wonderland and BBC Introducing. Half Scottish, half Sudanese, and based in London, her narrative trails are as interesting as her song constructions and live, we know she’ll be just as exhilarating. But when he discovers that the layout doesn’t match the original plans, a dark discovery awaits him. A tale of gentrification meeting a man plunging headfirst into oblivion. Director: JP Davidson. 8.30pm, Rich Mix.

The East End Film Festival presents JACKRABBIT! Both thrillingly ambitious and beautifully lo-fi, Carleton Ranney’s John Carpenter-inflected debut takes place in a future, apocalyptic America. Set decades after an event known as ‘the reset’, life in Sector 6 is dominated by surveillance, teen suicide, and 1980s technology. Brought together by a friend’s suicide and a mysterious hard drive, Max and Simon begin to explore what might lie outside the city limits, and especially a radio tower which might hold the key to bringing down their fascistic overlords. Cloaked in a minimal-synth score by MGMT’s Will Berman, Jackrabbit is a brilliantly atmospheric slice of analogue science fiction. Director: Carleton Ranney. 9.30pm Hackney Picturehouse

East End Film Festival presents THE DARKEST UNIVERSE! Will Sharpe and Tom Kingsley follow the BAFTA-nominated Black Pond with an often hilarious, always poignant tale of troubled sibling relationships, alienation and aliens. When his sister Alice and her boyfriend disappear on the canalways of London, Zac desperately sets out to find her. Featuring Joe Thomas and Simon Bird, The Darkest Universe is a brilliantly distinctive, emotive piece of comedic filmmaking, featuring some of Britain’s most exciting young comic actors. Dir. Tom Kingsley, Will Sharpe. 6.30pm – Genesis

East End Film Festival presents NATIVE – When a signal is received from the other side of the universe, Cane and Eva are dispatched to colonise a distant world. So begins Native, a stylish and cannily directed slice of science fiction. Featuring a powerful turn from Rupert Graves, and with much of the film being shot in East London, Native is a gripping vision of a future hive-mind society, and enduring questions of what it means to be human, and whether we should serve our masters. Dir. Daniel Fitzsimmons. 9pm, Genesis

East End Film Festival presents WE ARE THE FLESH – Grisly, beautiful and frequently bonkers, We Are The Flesh is a fairytale of power, rebirth and fresh meat. Wandering through a ruined city, a young brother and sister discover a building inhabited by a mysterious hermit. Offering them sanctuary, it’s the beginning of a spiritual, visceral journey that offers the possibility of rebirth, in Emiliano Rocha Minter’s utterly distinctive, visually extraordinary kaleidoscope of a debut. Produced by Carlos Reygades and EEFF 2014 Director in Residence Sebastian Hofmann, this may be the work of Latin America’s next great director. Also supported by Mexican heavyweights Alejandro González Iñárritu and Alfonso Cuaron, you’ve never seen anything quite like this. Dir. Emiliano Rocha Minter. 9pm, Hackney Picturehouse

East End Film Festival presents LONDON OVERGROUND – ‘A tiny little map of what is happening now’ is how legendary east London author Iain Sinclair describes the London Overground line, the subject of John Roger’s (Make Your Own Damn Art, EEFF 2012) film following Sinclair and frequent collaborator Andrew Kötting as they traverse the train line on foot. Undertaken for the purposes of Sinclair’s book of the same name, this journey takes place over a year as opposed to the day’s walk written about by Sinclair. But that simply creates space for Sinclair’s fascination with the ‘Ginger Line’ as the ‘spin-drier of capitalism, whirling banknotes around the city…a real moment to look at this city of unreal money’. An engrossing, frequently humorous exploration of a unique mind, and its insights into a changing city. Dir. John Rogers – 3.45, Rio

Some of the most intriguing and important urban artists have been free to rise to the occasion in the environment they best excel in – the street. THE NEED FOR GENRE – WHO DECIDES? PHILIP REEVE AND L. A. WEATHERLY IN CONVERSATION WITH JOURNALIST DAMIAN KELLEHER“We have an instinct to need to label books but who does the labeling? The reader, the author, the retailer or the publisher? Does it help readers by guiding them to books they may enjoy or result in narrow reading? Philip’s Predator Cities series came to characterize ‘steampunk’. His classic ‘space opera’ Railhead is a deliberate move away from that label and the trend for dystopian fiction. Following on from her ‘paranormal romance’ trilogy Angel, Lee Weatherly wanted to move away from writing in any specific genre. Since writing the Broken trilogy her readers have talked of it as ‘dieselpunk’.” Waterstones Piccadilly, 203/206 Piccadilly, London, W1J 9HD

IRAQI SCI-FI WITH HASSAN BLASIM“See visions of Iraq’s future, 100 years from the 2003 invasion. A group of Iraqi writers have projected their imaginations out to 2103, a century on from the 2003 American- and British-led invasion that ravaged their already battle-scarred homeland. Will the fallout from so many years of conflict extend into the next century, or will the decades between now and then be defined by repair and rebirth? Will sectarian struggles intensify still further, or might Iraq finally have escaped chaos and found its own peace a hundred years down the line? These questions are explored in Iraq+100, a new anthology of science fiction short stories edited by Hassan Blasim, the award-winning author of The Iraqi Christ. At this talk, Blasim is joined by a number of the anthology’s contributors to discuss the fate of Iraq, and the power of fiction as a lens through which one may envision the future.” (The London Literature Festival – Living in the Future) 4pm – 5.15pm – Weston Roof Pavilion at Royal Festival Hall, The Southbank Centre, Belvedere Road, SE1 8XX

WORDLESS! “Art Spiegelman & Phillip Johnston at the Barbican! In his Pulitzer prize-winning masterpiece Maus … Art Spiegelman changed the definition of comics. Here he collaborates with Jazz composer Phillip Johnston on a show that expands the possibilities of the medium. Wordless! transforms the intimate act of reading comics into a group experience. Spiegelman leads you on a tour of the first graphic novels – silent picture stories made by early 20th-century masters like Frans Masereel, Lynd Ward, and Milt Gross – alongside a new work of his own drawn specifically for this show, Shaping Thought. Both the images on screen, and Spiegelman’s own infectious enthusiasm for the graphic novel are enhanced by Johnston’s swinging score, performed by his Jazz sextet The Silent Six.” The Barbican Centre, Silk St, London EC2Y 8DS

Crick Crack Club presents MYTHS RETOLD – WHERE THE BEAR SKEEPS: THE KALEVALA. “In 2000 Nick Hennessey entered the world championship of epic-singing in Espoo near Helsinki, performing the Kalevala, the Finnish national epic, to the Finns, in English – and won. Join him in a performance that journeys into the deep, snow-filled forests of the Finnish far north, where the river of the underworld flows dark and fast, and the summer sun shines just a little too bright. In this world created from shards of eggshell, the sun and moon are fought over, magic is done and undone, and life is shot through with bizarre ordeals, misguided passions, magical battles and transformations. Expect a remarkable performance of elemental epic.” The British Museum, Great Russell Street, London, WC1B 3DG
