We take in Adult Fiction, fantastical and general, creative and socially minded Non-Fiction, Children’s and YA and Graphic Novels. Whether you’re a general or genre reader or a bookshop looking to make sure your customers aren’t missing out we try to balance an inclusion of the biggest titles with slipstream / crossover hits and those hidden gems for all concerned.

Selections are by Tim Bayley and are drawn from publisher submissions, The Bookseller magazine’s own monthly highlights, Buyer’s Guides and more. There’s a brief line or two from us with links (Waterstone’s on books, Forbidden Planet on Graphic Novels) onward for full information.

NB. We believe in supporting bricks and mortar stores whether online or in person and a tiny snippet of any purchase comes our way to go towards site upkeep so any and all support very much appreciated!

So relax and browse on and check out the great reads in print coming your way in January.

SENLIN ASCENDS * Josiah Bancroft * 9780356510811 * PB * £8.99 * Orbit * The Books of Babel * 1

Slipstream literary ‘Fantasy of Manners’: Joshua Bancroft’s paperback original may well be one of the year’s surprise hits that’s not a major surprise. Unlikely hero Senlin, with the pedadgogic skills of a headmaster, must enter the wild, liminal world of the Tower of Babel to save his bride. The sequel hits in March: sounds like Orbit aren’t messing around with this one 😉

A TIME OF DREAD * John Gwynne * 9781509812943 * HB * £20.00 * Pan Macmillan * Blood and Bone * 1

First in series, the series being a sequel to Gwynne’s Faithful and the Fallen quartet, set many years after, a historic and mythically-based epic now a mainstay in the genre and on bookselves…

READY PLAYER ONE (FILM TIE-IN EDITION) * Ernest Cline * 9781784754792 * PB * £8.99 * Cornerstone

Just an unashamed love-letter to geek culture? You don’t get a Spielberg film just for that. AREA X: THE SOUTHER REACH TRILOGY * Jeff VanderMeer * 9780008288211 * HB * £25.00 * Harper Voyager

VanderMeer’s blockbuster series of four women investigating and weird and dangerous region receives the filmic treatment courtesy of Alex Garland, and the collected hardback treatment courtesy of Harper Voyager…

BORDERED LIVES: HOW EUROPE FAILS REFUGEES AND MIGRANTS * Hsaio-Hung Pai * 9781780264387 * PB * £9.99 * New Internationalist

The real and ongoing crisis through personal accounts by a journalist who specialises in highlighting human stories that some would rather brush under the carpet

The title itself doesn’t nearly express what Detective Sergeant Verdi went through at the hands of his employers during his time in the Met and the vendetta against him afterward. Truly shocking and important.

WHEN THEY CALL YOU A TERRORIST * Patrisse Khan-Cullors, asha bandele (lower case initials as author’s preference) * 9781786893024 * HB * £16.99 * Canongate

“Empowering account of survival, strength and resilience” by the co-founder of Black Lives Matter with author, poet and journalist bandele.

THE BATTLEMAGE * Taran Matharu * 9781444924268 * PB * £7.99 * Hodder * The Summoner * 3

If we said Dungeons and Dragons meets Pokemon and it intrigued you to read this cracking series then go for it; if it doesn’t then just rest assured it’s a cracking little series…

WAR: WIZARDS AND ROBOTS * Will.i.am and Brian David Johnson * 9780141360683 * HB * £12.99 * Penguin

We kept an ear and an eye out for what Will(.i.am) of the Black Eyed Peas is up to after hearing about his charitable work helping families to avoid losing their homes in the US after the financial crisis and setting up a scholarship fund also. So we were pleased to hear that he’d made his foray into comics, publishing the Hip Hop zombie thriller Masters of the Sun through Marvel (July 2017, original graphic novel). Now he’s collaborated on this YA title which serves up rather what you’d expect on the cover, but against a significantly grounded historical backdrop. Definitely worth checking out…

Any mention of vampires and we tend to run a mile: oh the horror of yet another hackneyed creature-of-the night incarnation. But Pat (Slaine, ABC Warriors, 2000 AD itself) Mills has concocted something extreme, astonishing and truly original with his and Olivier Ledroit’s Requiem, this being the penultimate volume…
