STEAMPUNK (and Associated Fantastical Anachronisms) Books in 2017!

CA - Steampunk A
Ah Steampunk – and the singular allure of Victoriana with added steam, cogs and fantastical contrivances. What’s that sir / madam? You’d like an overview of the literary diversions of the very same and associated anachronistic, retro-futuristic fiction published in 2017? Well you’ve come to the right place!

We have many fine articles for your perusal here after, but it seems you’ve landed on the very one you’re looking for: read on!

URBAN FANTASY (and choice associated fictions) Books in 2017!

Car - Urban Fantasy We love our Urban Fantasy here at Carabas and one of the sub-genre’s we particularly focus on, having appeal both to genre fans and mainstream readers. So here’s a round-up of the great UF books and graphic novels publishing/ed in 2017!

NB. This is pretty comprehensive round-up of the UK scene though necessarily arbitrary in some inclusions and omissions. As mentioned elsewhere we tend to assume that anyone looking for their next paranormal romance and / or vampire-werewolf led read will know exactly where to find it. This isn’t an attempt to define the sub-genre and while we’re more than happy to hear about obvious omissions we all have to draw a line somewhere.

n-jan-17-studying-hammer-horror G - Mar - The Walking Dead Vol 27

Another day of the year or time to dress up and party? Whatever your take,, Halloween can’t be far from anyone’s mind as the end of October approaches conjuring for many of us, amongst other thoughts, the notion of shutting the door on the dark outside and curling up with something appropriately… spooky? Eerie? Macabre? Chilling?

Well whether you’re a book reader or a book seller, we think we’ve got all of that covered with some of the great publishing from the latter half of the year for your at-home and in-store shelves and tables: Fiction, Graphic Novels… and Non-Fiction as well – we hope you like!

A Game of Tropes: Roles and Reality in George RR Martin’s Epic Fantasy by Tim Bayley

Anyone who’s taken more than a passing interest in Game of Thrones / A Song of Ice and Fire will know that much of it is based on elements of history. While working on projects of a not dissimilar nature myself it struck me that there’s also something more particular that George RR Martin is doing in his epic series.

*
What I’m referring to is that our Mr Martin is not just basing fantasy on history and the harsher reality thereof but also, in his characteristic uncompromising style, expressing how treasured fantasy tropes might actually be realised in a historical setting.

Progressive and Socially-Minded Books publishing Jan-Jun 2017!

So Carabas is here to champion ‘all the good stuff’: imaginative, fantastical and cult fiction and film, alternative music, comics and graphic novels across genres, worthy non-fiction of and around the same – especially those books which provide an insight into the social concerns of today. This page is for readers and retailers to discover great titles that challenge perspectives and raise awareness they may wish to buy or stock and sell.

*
We believe in supporting bricks-and-mortar and you’ll find book links to a preferred chain (rather than a certain global online retailer) on other pages but all links here go to the title on Hive. Hive supports independent bookshops by enabling customers to order online with some great offers to match more corporate suppliers and nominate their local independent to receive a cut of the sale value or pick it up from them.

CP - Hive So please find our round-up of socially minded and progressive non-fiction, and fiction in prose and graphic novel form, from January to June 2017 below (Jul-Dec 2016 titles can be found here). If you’re a customer please support independents (especially if they’ve been good enough to tweet / RT us) by purchasing direct from them or choosing them on Hive – we get a small percentage of the latter which will help pay site costs and keep us going. Cheers for reading and hope you enjoy!

Preview: Mr Men Dr Who (Dr Who Mr Men?!!!) by Adam Hargreaves!

In this era of pop culture mash-ups few, whichever finally hit the bigtime mainstream market, leap out as anything special. But MR MEN DR WHO? Oh we were onto this without seeing a single image.

The much loved – and still hilarious at any age – Mr Men were of course the creation of Roger Hargreaves, subsequent characters and adventures created and curated by his son Adam. This is his latest and arguably – okay to those of us older than 5 – greatest MM venture, debuting the last week of April 2017 (link below to launch event at Forbidden Planet).

*

We spoke to those nice folk at Random House and asked for some preview pages to share. We were onto this without seeing a single image having no doubt how much fun they would be. Damn were we right… 🙂
