NB. While our initial sweep of profiles is targetting those authors in the London-ish area and / or those who have works set there, Michael Marshall Smith gets in on the grounds that he was based in (North) London – and that he’s written some of our favourite books ever.
Only Forward Michael Marshall Smith blew us away in the 90’s with his speculative fiction, published by Harper Voyager. He was often described as the SF author you could recommend to those who didn’t read sci-fi. Suspenseful, full of humour – by turns whimsical, abstract and dark; ‘mind-blowing’ was and is an over-used term and sometimes you need an author like this to remind you what it really means. CPP - Spares

CPP - One of Us And likewise with ‘genre-busting’. These early books – SPARES, ONLY FORWARD, and ONE OF US, not to mention his short story collection WHAT YOU MAKE IT – made most ‘Science Fiction’ seem constrained. They were described as slipstream; even now we could only invent and suggest Leftfield Reality-Punk by way of improvement on accurate categorisation. CPP - What You Make It
Next came his contemporary thrillers when he dropped the ‘Smith’ as an author of that surname had also written a book called The Straw Men; he decided to retain the alternate name for these non-SF and other works. CPP - The Straw Men CPP - The Lonely Dead CPP - Blood of Angels
CPP - The Intruders CPP - Bad Things CPP - We Are Here His more recent books were acquired (in the UK) by Orion. Michael also publishes short stories electronically through his own Ememess Press, and you can discover more in the collections listed on his Wikipedia page (links to both above). Having lived in North London for some years he’s now moved to California.
