All-New All-Different Marvel! News & Opinion – ongoing…

CA - ANAD Marvel DC and Marvel have been unrelenting in new starts over the last years. But when the scheme of their current event Secret Wars was unveiled it became clear that a truly fresh start was coming. Under Jonathan Hickman’s Avengers epic universes are colliding and being destroyed, and the Marvel Universe you know is on a direct course for the Marvel Ultimate Universe (which you may also know!)

The result? A combined new-ish Universe. Check out the latest news below – Opinion’s my own but I’ve got to say – the understandable cynicism of old-school readers aside – there has not been one announcement so far that has not been somewhere between ‘damn interesting’ and ‘Hell yes!’

I’ll be updating with more as it comes…

For once, as an old-school fan, my fears were allayed. This is not a reboot. If I had any doubt a Marvel writer or staffer (I forget which) said the magic words: We have the longest continual narrative in history. We are not going to throw that away. Instead, after the events of Secret Wars which is the mash-up reality of the colliding universes, we jump on some 8 months with the incorporation of some elements of the Ultimate U and doubtless the movies / TV shows into the new(ish) mainstream Marvel U – during which time stuff has happened. So what if DC have done the ‘some time later’ thing. Marvel haven’t rebooted and they’ve used the opportunity to continue what in my opinion is laudable – and not cynical, regardless of sales – developments in diversity of race and gender to comics.

UPDATED: TOTALLY AWESOME HULK #1 – Written by GREG PAK, Art by FRANK CHO – On Sale in December!

CA - ANAD - Totally Awesome Hulk #1
Scripted by another of my absolutely top writers, who’d had five years on the original Hulk, Greg Pak, with art by Frank Cho! This time it’s a new Hulk, and okay it was the Red Hulk before but whatever: the twist is that this Hulk likes being the Hulk. And who is it? Well while not a huge surprise we’re more than happy with the reveal (as of 4th Sep) that it’s the original Hulk’s pal, created by Pak some year’s back, boy genius Amadeus Cho! And, as Marvel notes, it’s their first Korean-American Hulk… 😉

RED WOLF #1 – Written by NATHAN EDMONDSON, Art by DALIBOR TALAJIC, Cover and Consulting by JEFFREY VEREGGE – Coming December…

CA - ANAD - Red Wolf #1

CA - ANAD - Red Wolf #1 Dale Keown Variant

One of the genuinely exciting things in superhero comics is when someone sees potential in ‘that guest-star character’ and the publisher brings the commitment to an ongoing series of the book. Marvel have a few Native American characters in their stable (we would have suspected Black Crow or the American eagle) from which to build diversity in their output but it was the more recent version of Red Wolf – from the pages of Secret Wars – that has caught Nathan Edmondson’s eye. With consultation from Native American cover artist Jeffrey Veregge, this is something that could be pretty special. Oh, and we’re not fussed here about variant covers – but we are most certainly fussed about Dale Keown’s art, so we’ve added his variant here as well!
From Marvel: The Marvel Universe’s American Southwest now has a superhero to call its very own – the mysterious new hero, RED WOLF! Recently seen within the pages of Secret Wars’ 1872, this new hero is suddenly thrust into the new Marvel Universe as its latest righteousness defender no matter what it takes! An outsider and an honest man, Red Wolf is going to need all his wits, and both his fists, to serve and protect this new world from the corrupt organizations that want to control this already stifling landscape of the gritty and harsh American Southwest.
Series writer Nathan Edmondson (Black Widow, Punisher) is joined by artist Dalibor Talajić (Uncanny X-Force, Empire of the Dead) and cover artist Jeffrey Veregge, a member of the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe based out of Kingston, Washington, who’s also of Suquamish and Duwamish decent. Veregge will also be providing consulting when it comes to characterization and design for the new series.
“There’s not a character like Red Wolf out there right now,” Veregge told Mashable at the time of the series announcement. “As a native, I’m really excited to see that he can do things, he can figure out things and stand with Captain America, and hold his own in this universe. That’s what’s awesome about it: You have all these characters of different nationalities and ethnicities, but it’s not all about their culture. It’s about them being a hero.”
There’s something about that harsh terrain of the American Southwest that requires an adaptable, thoughtful, resourceful hero, and that’s Red Wolf all over,” said series editor Jacob Thomas. “He doesn’t have amped up strength or tech, he’s got quick wits, hard fists, and an unshakeable sense of justice. Underestimate him at your own peril.”
This December, the new Marvel Universe gains a new hero who pledges to never let the crushing hands of ruthlessness control those who cannot defend themselves. Red Wolf is here to keep order and maintain peace… no matter the cost.

CA - ANAD - Patsy Walker aka Hellcat #1 PATSY WALKER, A.K.A. HELLCAT #1 – Written by KATE LETH, Art by BRITTNEY WILLIAMS – Coming December…
From Marvel: Written by Kate Leth (Adventure Time) and with art by Brittney Williams (Lumberjanes), PATSY WALKER, A.K.A. HELLCAT!  will spotlight this modern-day superhero who refuses to say NO to any adventure even if it does prove to be more than what she can handle.
“I want to continue the thread of her being the kind of girl who calls you up out of the blue and you always say yes, because it’s an adventure,” says Leth.  “She’s a super hero martial-arts wiz that can sense mystical energy! She learned how to fight on the moon, so you KNOW she’s good at what she does and has the history to back it up.”
Patsy Walker aka Hellcat Williams Character Designs
Beginning her heroic career with the Avengers and then becoming a core member of the Defenders, Hellcat’s new series will be inviting readers into a no-nonsense journey following this kick-ass super hero as she tries to make a name for herself alongside some of the most powerful Marvel heroines around.
“With this series, Kate and Brittney are going to provide a unique spin on the super hero, providing readers with a Patsy Walker who is both supremely relatable and supremely awesome,” says editor Wil Moss. “And look for guest appearances by all of Marvel’s top female heroes, including She-Hulk, Kate Bishop, Captain Marvel and maybe even the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl!”

CA - ANAD Marvel Dr Strange Update from entry below (bottom). Amongst the new creator teams / books coming from, we could hardly think of a better match than Jason Aaron with Chris Bachalo on Doctor Strange, coming in October: “If anyone’s right for a mix of action and abstract it’s Chris Bachalo – and Jason Aaron of course…” And now we’ve got some preview art to share…

Weirdworld_1_Cover WEIRDWORLD #1 – Written by SAM HUMPHRIES, Art by MIKE DEL MUNDO – Coming December!
We always keep an eye out as to what Sam Humphries is working on. He’s got a knack for conceiving story set-ups with solid – while sometimes wonderfully off-the-wall – background. Here he gets to play with the Marvel Universe but in a place where he can explore whatever he feels like; it could be something rather special. Also a female lead continuing Marvel’s bringing relateable female characters into its cast. We can quite imagine a serious future in the mainstream MU – if she survives Weirdworld…
From Marvel (abridged): “Weirdworld is a place where anything can happen,” says series writer Sam Humphries in an interview with Marvel.com. “Weirdworld is a place inside the Marvel Universe. Weirdworld is a place where the lost can be found. But only if you’re strong enough…”
Imagine a world of sword and sorcery, a land where lost things go. Now imagine being trapped there with zero sword or sorcery experience! Meet Becca, an ordinary girl in an extraordinary world with one mission in mind – GET HOME ALIVE! Easier said than done! But how did she come to be here? And how can she hope to escape in one piece?
“Weirdworld is a place that is ever changing, always chaotic, and a place of infinite discovery,” continued Humphries. “Its essential nature is so mysterious that no complete map can ever be created. It is a polyglot of fantasy, horror, sci-fi, and other weird things dug up from the brains of myself and [artist] Mike Del Mundo.”
Barbarians! Wizards! Goblins! Even tricked out sports cars! All await Becca around every turn in the depths of Weirdworld.

STARBRAND AND NIGHTMASK #1 – Written by Greg Weisman, Art by Domo Stanton – Coming December… CA - ANAD - Starbrand and Nightmask #1
In the lead up to Secret Wars, Marvel Universe versions of these New Universe characters were created. Reception on these particular incarnations may be mixed but they have so much potential and it sounds like Greg Weisman has got solid ideas for this series based, as Spider-Man was, in a college scenario, and cannily having them as a double-act to bolster the appeal. Interesting stuff…
From Marvel (abridged): They are beings of unspeakable power. Former Avengers and cosmic entities that have defended Earth from the far reaches of the cosmos. This December, they return from outer space to embark on the adventure of a lifetime – going to college! Marvel is pleased to announce STARBRAND & NIGHTMASK #1 – a brand new ongoing series from critically acclaimed writer Greg Weisman (Star Wars: Kanan) and rising star artist Domo Stanton (Deadpool)!
“Nightmask is the Herald (and conscience) for Earth’s Starbrand (i.e. it’s Planetary Defense Mechanism),” says series writer Greg Weisman in an interview with Marvel.com. “He’s been tutoring Starbrand in his powers, and they really are best friends. In fact, each is practically the other’s ONLY friend.”
Imbued with cosmic powers, they’ve battled alongside some of the universe’s greatest champions. And repelled invasions from destructive alien forces. But nothing will prepare them for the likes of class registration, choosing a major and midterms. What meal plan will cover a cosmic metabolism? Can two all-powerful entities share a dorm room the size of a roach motel? Can you safely teleport to Mars after partying all night long at your first kegger?
“Kevin (Starbrand) is actually very reluctant to go back to college. (His last stint didn’t end well, to say the least.) But Adam (Nightmask) insists that they both attend college, because Kevin needs to reconnect with humanity. After all, if he’s going to protect the planet, Kevin needs to care about its inhabitants.”

ALL-NEW INHUMANS #1 – Written by Charles Soule and James Asmus, Art by Stefano Caselli – coming December… CA - ANAD - All-New Inhumans #1
As mentioned before Marvel are building the Inhumans as a line / brand as an alternative to the X-Men, the cinematic rights to which are owned by Fox (the Inhumans apparently debuted in Marvel’s TV/Cinematic universe in Season 2 of Agents of  SHIELD and are due to hit the big screen in their own movie in 2019).
So far we have Uncanny Inhumans and solo character titles like Ms Marvel, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur (see below) and Karnak. Main Inhumans writer Charles Soule and co-writer James Asmus have split the classic family line-up to mix – Crystal and Gorgon here – with other characters so we get a second team book, All-New Inhumans. All-New is more of a label but does here refer to the emerging characters the team are there to help, as described below…
From Marvel (abridged): Part diplomatic emissaries, part covert strike team, Crystal and her team have one mission: protect their new and growing race by any means necessary! As the Terrigen Cloud rips across the planet, leaving new Inhumans in its wake – Crystal, Gorgon, Flint, Naja and Grid travel all over the world and stop at nothing to help those in need, and put a stop to those who would harm their people.
“All-New Inhumans in particular will focus on the strange and dangerous complication that come from a global unleashing of NuHumans,” says writer James Asmus in an interview with Marvel.com.
But when mysterious Skyspears begin appearing all over the world, their appearance could have dangerous and cataclysmic consequences for Inhumans across the globe.
“Skyspears are big obelisk-type artifacts that have appeared in or near population centers all around the globe,” explains Charles Soule. “They can’t be moved, or damaged, or even really affected in any way. Their purpose is part of a pretty long play, but the All-New Inhumans will definitely be involved with their ongoing story.”

CA - ANAD - Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur #1 From Marvel – Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, coming November: From the creative team of Amy Reeder, Brandon Montclaire and Natacha Bustos comes a story of unlikely friendship in the Mighty Marvel Manner!
Meet Lunella Lafayette, pre-teen super genius who just wants to change the world and help those in need. Possessing latent Inhuman DNA, Lunella’s unsure of what her strange future might hold. But when she stumbles on ancient Kree technology, things are about to get a whole lot stranger.
Opening a doorway to the prehistoric past, her life is turned upside down as she comes face-to-face with a towering Jurassic giant known only as DEVIL DINOSAUR! But he is not alone. Out of the portal and in to the Marvel Universe emerge the Killer-Folk – an ancient tribe of beings who will stop at nothing to acquire the alien technology!
MOON GIRL AND DEVIL DINOSAUR is the latest in a laudable, concerted effort by Marvel to be representative in the diversity of it’s readers, as well as to champion the Inhumans as an alternative line to the X-Men given the latter’s cinematic ownership by Fox with whom Marvel have a less than cordial relationship with. This follows in the gentle giant tradition we last remember at Marvel with Sentinel, and we’re giving it a big thumbs up as what we believe to be angst-free fun and wonder for all ages in the vein of G. Willow Wilson’s wonderful and highly recommended Ms Marvel. Also it’s got a dinosaur! Also that dinosaur is Devil Dinosaur! This could be one of those surprise hits so keep an eye on it… CA - ANAD - Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur Bustos Design Sketches
Nice one guys – look forward to checking it in November!

CA - ANAD - Hercules #1 Just in (30/07): Ancient Hero Meets Modern World in HERCULES #1! By DAN ABNETT and LUKE ROSS – coming November…
Check out our Author Profile of the fab Dan Abnett here!
Hercules was always more of a team character (within the Avengers) or guest star and more set for limited series than ongoing for solo adventures – or so it seemed until luminaries Greg Pak and Christos Gage got work in the aftermath of World War Hulk. They’ve moved on to other things now so it would be hard to greet the return of the hero they made great with optimism unless someone of a similar calibre were to be on script duties.
Enter Mr Dan Abnett who made Guardians of the Galaxy the comic that could become the blockbuster film it did! And it’s a rather clever blurb to give to it: Hercules – in the Marvel universe – probably is “the world’s first super hero”.
“Hercules is fun, brash and one of Marvel’s more interesting characters because of his connections to both the Avengers as well as ancient Greek mythology,” says series Editor Katie Kubert. “A hero of all eras, he’s trying to re-establish what being a hero means today, and what better place to attempt to do that than NYC with his buddy Gilgamesh at his side? “
Sorry with Gilgamesh?! Yeah, this is going to be fun…

Contest of Champions – Written by Al Ewing, Art by Paco Medina – Coming Fall 2015… CA - ANAD - Contest of Champions #1
Check out our preview of Contest of Champions here!
From Marvel: Inspired by Marvel’s wildly popular mobile fighting game, “Marvel Contest of Champions”, the comic book series, CONTEST OF CHAMPIONS, will merge the worlds of gaming and comics into an epic journey and present a story unlike anything else from Marvel. “We’re doing something unique and exciting here by merging Kabam’s highly popular mobile game with the Marvel Universe,” says series editor Mark Paniccia. “The game has really cool elements and concepts that will become part of the Marvel Comics’ mythos, resonating in Marvel continuity in a big way. We’re working closely with the folks at Kabam to expand The Battlerealm and that organically ties into the aftermath of SECRET WARS.”
And just which heroes will take on the mantle of “champions” in order to fight for their very existence in the new Marvel Universe? “We’re going to have a whole bunch of Marvel’s finest popping up regularly – even the dead aren’t always beyond the reach of the Contest, so expect the return of an old face or two,” says series writer Al Ewing.  “Some of the ‘pawns’ are there until they die, but others are beamed in, forced to fight and then returned to Earth with their memories wiped, all to add spice to the battles – in the first issue we have contestants ranging from Iron Man, Gamora and Venom to Moon Boy and Devil Dinosaur, so anyone can have a place in the Battlerealm!”
The contest begins as champions – both heroes and villains – from various universes must compete in a cosmic battle. The ultimate prize: their continued existence. The battle begins this fall with CONTEST OF CHAMPIONS #1.

Just in (27/06) – All-New Fantastic Uncanny Inhumans! Or just Uncanny Inhumans… CA - ANAD Uncanny Inhumans
This is a mash-up cast of the Inhuman Royal Family – Medusa, Black Bolt and Triton – an intriguing newer Inhuman, Reader, then the Human Torch after the dissolution of the Fantastic Four who’ve long been connected to the Inhuman’s, and the X-Men’s Beast (who kind of hasn’t). It’s the work of existing Inhumans writer Charles Soule – and Steve McNiven!
Marvel are going for the intrigue as Johnny Storm is now paramouring Medusa, the older sister of his young love Crystal, and Black Bolt is running covert operations for his own reasons. Soule revealed with regard to Secret Wars: “something happened – something gigantic. Something that will affect Inhumans and Mutants alike”. And behind the scenes the villains the Midnight King and Kang have their own agenda…

Still Current…

CA - ANAD Marvel Avengers A recent announcement, but even as a confirmation it’s punch-the-air news – Mark Waid on the (All-New, All-Different) Avengers! And not just that but the legendary Adam Kubert is on art duties! He’ll be alternating to keep a high output with Mahmud Asrar which is good news in itself! Fab creative team all round, but I have to say I’m stoked to have Mark Waid writing the Avengers. He’s got that understated but brilliant combo of being a straightforward old-style comic-scribe entertainer capturing the essence of staple characters and their adventures; but he also brings a wild creativity channeled into appropriate stories and nuanced character development. About time he wrote Marvel’s lead team!
The team. Iron Man (see below) as an original Avenger and a long term mainstay. Then there’s two identities that were original and as good as now taken on by female and black leads: Thor – Jane Foster, Thor’s major love interest from the old days – and Captain America’s long term Afro-American partner the Falcon now as Captain America himself.
The Vision – an Avengers mainstay and personal favourite who’d been sidelined for years; he’s in good hands with Mark Waid!
Then we’ve got three young ‘legacy characters’. There’s Mike Morales as Spider-Man from the Ultimate Universe, a black Hispanic hero; there’s the second Nova, Sam Alexander. And then there’s the titular character from my undoubted current favourite Marvel comic, and one of my favourites ever: G Willow Wilson’s Kamala Khan – Ms Marvel! She’s a Muslim character and Marvel have been clearly waiting for the right time to bring her into the centre stage. And if anyone can do it right, especially as he’s written her once before, Mark Waid can.

***

CA - ANAD Marvel Squadron Supreme A new version of the team that were created as analogues so Marvel could play with the main DC characters / the Justice League, this time with James Robinson and Leonard Kirk on writing and art. “They’re definitely at the darker end of the heroic spectrum” says Robinson. Personally I prefer Superman style/power characters (Hyperion here, the Sentry in other stories) and analogue characters to be occasional visitors rather than regular fixtures. But it’s a well conceived series, this time with each team-member from a different destroyed reality – and this might just work…

***

Originating in Secret Wars, the all-female A-Force will continue in the New MU, with characters She-Hulk, Medusa, Nico Minoru, Dazzler, Captain Marvel and new hero Singularity. The artist is yet to be announced but G Willow Wilson is a major pull. Her work on Ms Marvel is just exceptional… CA - ANAD Marvel A-Force

***

CA - ANAD Marvel Captain Marvel Kelly Sue DeConnick has been at the helm of Captain Marvel – previously Ms Marvel – for years now. She very much made the title her own and built a solid and vocal fan-base; so it’s a bit of a shock that she’s actually leaving the book and the character!
But Marvel are maintaining the female voice in the writing with Agent Carter show-runners Tara Butters and Michele Fazekas on script duties; Kris Anka transfers from the X-Men to take on the art. It looks and sounds like the creative team will try and maintain the momentum and style built by their predecessors and keep the fans happy, while taking things in their own direction…

***

Spider-Man: but wait – that’s Mike Morales from the Ultimate Universe! Well it was no surprise that he would be an addition to the ‘main’ Marvel Universe, but clearly Marvel have decided to give him chance to claim his own place by having him as the lead and giving Peter Parker some well deserved time off. Brian Michael Bendis, Ultimate Spider-Man’s creator – both the original and Mike Morales and writer throughout – had felt happy to move on from the character. But then he got drawn back in for another run in the new MU, joined by his co-creator of Morales Sara Pichelli on art chores. CA - ANAD Marvel Spider-Man
So we get a Spider-Man for the next generation (and many of the old) to enjoy the stresses of being a hero with responsibility while trying to keep his personal and school life going; which might mean we’re finally allowed an older version of the one we grew up with…

***

CA - ANAD Marvel Spider-Gwen Not a character or series I’m personally excited about, though I can’t help but agree that the concept art of Spider-Gwen’s costume is pretty inspired.
This is the alternate reality of Spider-Man’s girlfriend Gwen Stacy who was killed by the Green Goblin in the regular MU. In the Spider-Verse crossover event she was massively well received so she gets her own new series courtesy of writer Jason Latour and artist Robbi Rodriguez. At least it’ll be in her own universe – for now anyway…

***

If there’s one thing that’s made me optimistic about All-New, All-Different Marvel it’s the match of creators to characters. Complete respect to Brian Michael Bendis: he’s an absolute pro at the top level of the global comics scene. This also means he doesn’t need me to be a fan – he’s done some great stuff but his vision of some of my favourite characters and series just really haven’t been my thing. CA - ANAD Marvel Iron Man image
But Iron Man… yes I can really see this working. Brian’s a big fan of the character and I think his take on Tony will be fantastic; definitely the right man for the job. And look at David Marquez’ art! That speaks for itself, and you can check out more on our Preview Page here!

***

CA - ANAD Marvel Dr Strange And on the subject of perfect matches… Jason Aaron is an absolutely superb and massively creative writer; the worst you could say is that you wished he’d written that happening to some other character or in some other world; even then having him on Doctor Strange is inspired. The good Doctor has had many false starts over the years but Aaron’s wild creativity will be perfectly at home in the ofttimes abstract world of Earth’s Sorcerer Supreme.
More than that it sounds like he’s got a great set-up. Because he’s far from the only sorcerer on Earth – so Aaron’s development of Strange as Top Dog at meetings of the magical makes perfect sense and should be a lot of fun!
And then there’s Chris Bachalo. I’ve known his work since the early days on Vertigo / Pete Milligan’s Shade the Changing Man, which was perfectly suited to his art and vice versa. When he got the X-Men Generation X gig he defined the series from the start, but his work on Uncanny X-Men just didn’t gel with me.
But Doctor Strange, that’s another story. If anyone’s right for a mix of action and abstract it’s Chris Bachalo – and Jason Aaron of course

*

So what am I most excited by? Very close between Waid and Kubert/Asrar’s Avengers and Aaron and Bachalo’s Dr Strange – Avengers on a tie-breaker.

How about yourself?

Here’s the two original promo images full-width:

CA - ANAD Marvel Promo Image 1

In addition to those discussed above here we’ve got Agent Coulson from the Avengers movie / Agents of SHIELD TV series; Jessica Drew, Spider Woman, a female lead who Marvel have been sort of managing back in to the mainstream MU; Black Panther, Marvel’s first black superhero, who will debut in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War movie before starring in his own film in 2017; then there’s an aged Steve Rogers, the original Captain America; Ant-Man (movie imminent!); lastly we’re pretty sure that’s Red Wolf sans the companion wolf, perhaps being brought to the fore as a native American for diversity.

CA - ANAD Marvel Promo Image 2

And here it looks like, with Marvel ‘dissolving’ the Fantastic Four due to corporate disagreements with the movie-makers, The Thing will be joining the Guardians of the Galaxy. Citizen V (bottom left) of the Thunderbolts looks to be returning, though who’s in costume is anyone’s guess. We’re unsure if the guy in the hoodie is Dr Doom, but that’s seems the vague consensus at the mo. We gather that’s Inferno behind him, a newer Inhuman, and the Medusa, one of the originals and series lead. Daredevil’s in more Netflix-esque (it’ll be in the dictionary in the next year or so) costume. Below that’s X-23, younger female clone of Wolverine in his classic garb, given Wolverine is still dead and not coming back ever in some massive event to enormous sales. Mind that is Old Man Logan on the right, a future version created by Mark Millar who looks to be coming into the MU from Secret wars. And yep, that’s Rocket Raccoon and Star Lord from Guardians of the Galaxy mixed in for good measure.

Lastly here’s a checklist of confirmed titles in the New MU, as put together by Rich Johnston on Bleeding Cool: “…the books mentioned or confirmed to be continuing in one interview or another. With an occasional rumour thrown in for good measure.”

All New All Different Avengers
Gamora
Doctor Strange
Extraordinary X-Men
Uncanny X-Men (Bendis has mentioned someone will be taking over the book after him)
